How much does installing an exterior front door cost?

The average is about $1,030, but that cost can vary depending on several factors, including where you live, what kind of door you choose, the brand, the size, and who's installing it.

Exterior doors are the entry doors on the front, back or side of your house. Not only does a new exterior door installation make your home look good, but an exterior door needs to be in good shape to protect your home from the elements and give you easy but secure access.

The cost to replace an exterior door is an investment, but a worthy one. Exterior doors most often should be installed by a professional so they fit well and give adequate protection from bugs, weather, temperature leaks and burglars.

Exterior door installation cost

Do you install your new exterior door yourself or hire a professional? Replacing a door is considered a skilled job. There's nothing worse than a door that doesn't open and close properly and lets moisture in - or doesn't keep intruders out. If you haven't successfully installed doors before, hiring a professional may be the best choice. Carpenters usually spend 2 to 8 hours installing a door, depending on the difficulty of the task. Carpenters charge $40 to $90 labor per hour, depending on where you live. When you're pricing door types and materials, don't forget to add to your budget the cost of professional door installation.

The installation cost includes removing your old door, making any repairs to your door frame and door jamb, and making certain the new door fits. Then, the carpenter installs the new door and caulks and insulates around it. You may have to pay to have your old door hauled away and disposed of.

How to measure a door

Before you order a door, remember the old adage of measure twice, cut once. Double-check your measurements before you make more work for yourself or someone else or have to return a door that's the wrong size.

There are specific ways to measure your door and door openings so you end up with the right size for your opening. After your old door is off its hinges and you have a gaping hole in your home is not the right time to discover the replacement is too small or too big.

The first thing you'll want to measure is the width of your door. Start at the left edge and measure to the right edge, in a straight, horizontal line. Measure horizontally in several places horizontally and write down the smallest measurement. Next, measure the height of the door, from top to bottom, vertically. Measure several vertical locations and write down the smallest measurement. Don't include any weatherstripping that might be attached to the door.

Now that you've measured the door, turn your attention to the door jamb. Measure the depth of your wall (how thick your wall is) by measuring from the interior trim to the exterior trim. Again, measure in three areas and write down the smallest measurement.

These measurements, if carefully taken, help you buy a new door that should fit the space. You'll want to double-check measurements before you take your old door out, too. Being careful always beats being sorry.

Inswing or outswing?

Do you want a door that opens in (inswing door) or swings out (outswing)? Inswing doors tend to be the most popular, are less expensive and provide good safety and protection from the outdoors. Hinges are installed on the inside. You'll find more choices available for inswing doors, too.

An outswing door, which opens to the outside, also offers good safety and protection, but outswing doors are a great option if you have limited space inside. Outswing doors have hinges installed on the outside. Because they're not as popular as inswing doors, outswing doors may cost a little more and don't have as many choices available.

Parts of a door

If you're considering a new exterior entry door, you'll want to know that there are other parts that may need to be replaced along with just the door. Most standard size doors are 6'8" high and between 3' and 6' wide. If your door frame, threshold and other parts are in need of replacing or you have an odd-sized door, this can increase the replacement and installation costs.

Here are some parts of a door you'll become familiar with during the buying and installation process:

Door frame cost

New door frames cost $100 to $250. The door frame is the frame attached to your home that your door fits into.

Because door frames are often made of wood and face the ravages of weather like sun, rain, ice and snow, they may need to be repaired or replaced when you replace your door. You can choose a new door frame made of wood or composite. While composite door frames tend to be more expensive than just wood, they're more resistant to rot, insect pests and mold.

Door jamb cost

Your door hangs from the jamb. A new, basic door jamb costs from $35 to $50. The door jamb consists of the two upright parts of your door frame, on either side of your door.

Door hinges cost

Basic hinges can cost $10 to $20. Customized or specialty hinges cost more. Door hinges ensure that a door opens and closes smoothly. They're metal pieces that fit together. One part is installed on the door and the other on the frame. A door has two to three hinges.

Door knobs and locks cost

Door knobs cost $20 to hundreds of dollars. Door knobs and locks can be round or levers, and how much they cost depends on your chosen brand, material and security level. There are numerous materials and finishes to pick from, including brass, bronze, gold, black, chrome, and nickel.. You can also install keyless entry locks with a digital code or fingerprint locks so you don't have to pull out your keys every time.

Glass cost

Glass is something you may or may not have in your exterior door. If you want glass in your new door, you have lots of options. Along with the size and shape of the window, you can choose whether you want one or multiple panes of glass for more insulation and soundproofing capacity. You can choose single pane, double pane, triple pane, toughened (for security), stained, frosted, etched, or even distorted glass.

Door Parts Cost Average Cost Lowest Cost Highest Cost
Door frame $175.00 $100.00 $250.00
Door jamb $42.50 $35.00 $50.00
Door hinges $15.00 $10.00 $20.00
Door knob $20.00 $15.00 $25.00

Labor cost to install an exterior door

How much does it cost to install an exterior door? Budget to spend $40 to $90 per hour for a skilled laborer to install your door. You can expect it to take 2 to 3 hours to install a pre-hung door, and about 6 to 7 hours to install a door into an existing frame. If your frame, threshold or other parts need repairs, you'll need to set aside more money for labor.

If you're trying to cut down on installation costs, know that labor costs for installing pre-hung doors are less expensive than other types of doors that don't have the frame attached. You can save 30 to 50 percent of the labor cost with pre-hung doors.

Cost to install exterior door by type

There are many types of exterior doors available. You can order them pre-hung, or just the door. Pre-hung doors come with everything you need - the doorframe, door jamb and hinges. The hinge and lockset holes are already in place so you can easily install your own standard locks and door knobs. Pre-hung exterior doors cost between $96 and $146.

You can find out the cost to install a pre-hung door costs here. Pre-hung also is a good choice if your existing door frame is damaged, you're having a new house built, or having remodeling work done.

French doors cost

French doors cost $400 to more than $4,000, with an added $200 to $1,000 for installation. French doors can give an elegant look to your home with a full panel of windows, and can be either a single or double door. You can install French doors on exterior openings or even inside your home.

Security doors cost

Security doors cost do just that - help keep your home more secure. Often made of steel, these doors can protect from intruders or be fire-rated, or both.

Doors with sidelights or side panels cost

Door with sidelights or side panels are a popular option. This can add $500 or more to your standard door cost, but the slim, vertical window panel adds a distinctive look and allows more light into your interior space. You can pick a solid clear panel or one with glass that is stained, frosted or etched.

Double doors cost

Double doors cost from $700 into the thousands. Labor costs are higher as well, and may run you $500 to $1000 more. Double doors make a grand addition to your home. Double doors can be crafted from a number of materials, including wood, wrought iron, and fiberglass.

Patio or sliding doors cost

Patio or sliding doors let the light in. Many people chose a sliding glass or patio door as an exterior rear entry door. It gives a great view of your back yard and slides or accordions open so you don't lose space. Sliding doors allow lots of sunlight in to brighten your interior space. You'll find many varieties in various price ranges to suit your needs. Find out how much it costs to install a sliding door.

Multi-panel doors cost

Multi-panel doors whether they slide or are telescoping, are among the most expensive doors with the most pricey installation costs, but they give the feeling of not even having a wall, opening up to your outdoor space seamlessly.

Storm doors cost

Storm doors are less expensive than exterior doors. They're smaller, lighter, outward-swinging doors installed on the exterior side of your door. A storm door often has upper and lower panes of glass and a mesh screen within a frame. It adds insulation and keeps severe weather away from your door.

Screen doors cost

Screen doors cost between $80 and $200, with added installation costs. Screen doors let you enjoy fresh air without having your home open to mosquitoes and other bugs. The door mounts onto your existing exterior door jamb. Most screen doors have either wooden or aluminum frames with screens or a mesh insert.

Door Type Cost Average Cost Lowest Cost Highest Cost
French door $2,800.00 $600.00 $5,000.00
Side panels $500.00 $400.00 $600.00
Double door $750.00 $500.00 $1,000.00
Screen door $140.00 $80.00 $200.00

Hollow core or solid core door?

Among your new-door decisions: Do you want to buy a hollow-core door or a solid-core one? There are advantages to each type, including the price.

Hollow core doors are constructed from two thin panels of material with a supporting structure in between, holding it all together. Because they're hollow inside, they're lighter and cheaper. You can find hollow core doors for $30 to $50. Hollow core doors muffle some sound, but they're easy to damage and don't last as long. They'll need replacing sooner.

Solid core doors are made of a composite wood or solid wood so they're heavier and more expensive. Solid core doors cost $80 to $200 or more. They insulate not only against sound, but against heat or cooling loss. They can stand up against weather better and don't need to be replaced as soon as hollow core doors. Because they are wood, they can warp, expand or contract.

Door materials and prices

Once you've decided what type of door you want, you'll need to choose the material. You have lots of choices, from traditional wood to steel, fiberglass and even wrought iron. Prices can vary greatly depending upon the brand, quality and customization of your door. Below are some of the materials you can find doors constructed from, and their approximate costs for standard sizes.

Steel doors cost

Steel doors cost $390 to $775 and are long-lasting and easy to maintain. Homeowners choose them not only for front entry doors, but side and back doors. They're lower cost than some other options. However, there are negatives to choosing steel exterior doors. They aren't as weather-resistant as other types of doors and they can dent. You'll need to keep any scratches covered with paint so the steel door doesn't rust.

Wood door cost

Wood entry door prices range from $500 to $1000. Wood doors are a popular, attractive choice because they last a long time if they're maintained well. They're insulating, resist warping, and if they get scratched, wood doors can easily be repaired. Because of the wood, they may sag over time and need adjustments or repairs.

Aluminum door cost

Aluminum entry doors cost between $250 and $530. They're low-maintenance and don't rust or chip. However, they don't insulate against sound and they can be dented by feet, stray sports balls and other things.

Vinyl door cost

Vinyl doors are economical, at $350 to $550, are low-maintenance and they moderately insulate your space. These doors are resistant to weather but not easy to paint and can warp over time.

Composite door cost

Composite doors are affordable at $450 to $850, are versatile and energy-efficient. They feature better security than some other door materials, but the styles available are limited and they're not easy to paint or customize.

Fiberglass door cost

Fiberglass exterior doors cost $350 to $850 and are available in multiple design options. They resist dents and are easy to maintain. You can customize them with paint or stain, but these doors are not as durable as other types of exterior doors.

Wrought iron door cost

Wrought iron front doors cost from $1300 to $1800. They're more expensive but offer a unique appeal. They're energy-efficient and offer more security but require regular maintenance.

Custom exterior door cost

Custom exterior doors are available, and those prices depend upon how much the craftsman charges. Some homeowners prefer a different-sized door or one that has unique features like carvings or eye-catching details.

Door Material Cost Average Cost Lowest Cost Highest Cost
Steel door $582.50 $390.00 $775.00
Wood door $750.00 $500.00 $1,000.00
Aluminum $390.00 $250.00 $530.00
Vinyl $450.00 $350.00 $550.00
Composite $650.00 $450.00 $850.00
Fiberglass $600.00 $350.00 $850.00
Wrought iron $1,550.00 $1,300.00 $1,800.00

Installation process

Once you've settled on the door style, material, and brand and have chosen your installation professional, you can expect your carpenter to measure the new door and then trim and plane it to fit into your existing door jamb. If you've purchased a pre-hung door, the carpenter won't have to custom-trim or plane the door.

If you don't have a pre-hung door, your professional will examine your existing door frame and door jamb to ensure it's in good shape for the new door. If not, he'll make repairs to those.

He'll then mark and carve out (mortise) the locations where your purchased hinges will go and then install the hinges. The carpenter will then drill holes for the door handle and any deadbolt locks, and the door jamb's strike plate. He'll maneuver the door in place, secure it, make sure everything is level and properly aligned using shims. Then, he'll add insulation and caulking. These steps may vary depending on the type of door you've chosen.

Interior doors

When you're changing the look of your exterior entry door, you may consider replacing interior doors as well. You might ask the door installer if he gives a discount for more than one door installation. As with exterior doors, interior doors are available in multiple materials, like wood, composite, and fiberglass, hollow or solid, and you can pick French doors, Dutch doors, pocket doors, and more. New interior doors not only elevate your decor, but they can add soundproofing qualities to your home. Buying and installing interior doors usually are not as expensive as exterior doors. Find out how much interior doors installation costs in your area.

New door, new look

Having a new front door installed can change the entire look of your home and inspire you to redesign your porch decor and landscaping to align with the improved appearance. You'll wonder why you didn't change your door long ago.
